Electrocardiogram

What is an ECG?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that records your heart’s electrical activity. It is a very useful test, allowing the diagnosis of abnormal heart rhythms and abnormalities of your heart’s structure.

How is the test performed?
A technologist will place a number of electrodes (skin patches) on your arms legs and chest. These electrodes are connected to an ECG machine, which records your heart’s electrical activity for a few
minutes.

What are the risks?
An ECG is an extremely safe test. The only risk is skin irritation or an allergic skin reaction to the electrodes, which is rare and usually clears up without any specific treatment.
